New Year's Resolutions for Pet Owners

Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed the holiday season and are ready for a year of new beginnings.

Despite the recession and constant chatter about negative stuff on the news, we at Ruff Ruff and Meow have a positive outlook for what lies ahead. During this time of year, most American's are getting started on their New Year's Resolutions. As you plan to embark on your new resolutions for 2009, be sure to include your pets on the fun, too.

Here are some tips from the Ruff Ruff and Meow gang on New Year's Resolutions for your pets:

  1. Losing weight. Perhaps the most common New Year's Resolution is losing weight. But did you know, that many pets are overweight, too. If you plan to lose a few pounds this year, what better way than to get your best friend, your dog, in on the action. A fun way to get active is to commit to a daily walk with your furry friend. He or she will reap the benefits, as you both exercise together. What's more, if your dog is a larger breed, you may burn some extra calories if you can jog instead of walk along side each other. You may find that instead of walking just one mile by yourself, you're encouraged to walk even further, because you have someone by your side.
  2. Annual check-ups. Of course it's important to keep your health in check and schedule regular doctor's appointments. But don't forget about you pet's health, too. Make a commitment to take your dog or cat to their veterinarian for their yearly visit. Maintaining their health will not only save you money in the long run, but it will help them live a longer and happier life.
  3. Lifelong learning. Do you make it a practice to learn something new every year? Why not take some time to learn some new facts about your dog or cat's breed. Whether just for the fun of it, or to become a better parent, it won't hurt to include your pet in your quest for lifelong learning. The Internet is a wealth of information, so it shouldn't take you long to research and learn something new about your pet. This is especially important if you are considering buying a new pet this year. Do some research about the breed beforehand, so you fully understand what the pet requires. For example, if you are considering getting a new Boxer puppy, it may help to know this is a high-energy dog, who needs alot of attention and enjoys outside exercise, so if you live in a tiny apartment far away from any parks or areas to roam, this is something you may want reconsider.
  4. Take time for yourself. It may seem obvious, but in today's stressful society, we rarely take time to relax and pamper ourselves. If you find yourself running all the time, be sure to schedule some down time to relax. Perhaps you suffer from tension and you regularly need a massage to relieve the stress. Pets needs special attention, too. Take some time to learn pet massage. Not only is it a great way to bond with your pet, but this can help to give relief to older, arthritic animals, while helping you take some time away from the daily grind.
  5. Fashion Makeover. Ok, so you've been watching Style network for several months now, and you've come to the conclusion you need a makeover - or at least a new wardrobe - to jump start your stalled career or lackluster love life. Now is a great time to shop for new clothes, as many retailers have great sales on top name brand items. But, what about your pet? Is it time for you to revamp his doggie wardrobe, too? Chances are your loveable pooch is wearing the same old t-shirt he's worn for the past year. Why not treat your dog or cat to some new pet clothes from Ruff Ruff and Meow. They have hundreds of fashionable pet designs to choose from, so no matter what your dog or cat's personality, there's sure to be a style to match. From dog t-shirts, dog tanks tops, dog sweatshirts or dog bandanas, they have all the hottest pet fashions to help your pet turn heads at the dog park this year.
  6. Make Safety a Priority. Let's face it, we live in a dangerous world. If you don't know someone already who's been a victim of a crime, whether it be a traffic accident, a burglary or identity theft, unfortunately, crime is on the rise in many states. As the old adage says, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This holds true for your pets, too. Make it a priority to get your dog or cat some sort of pet identification, whether it be a tag or a microchip. Photos are also a good way to help identify your pet if it should become lost. In general, try not to let your pet roam free. Keep it on a leash or in a fenced yard.
  7. Donate. Whether it's to receive a tax break or just because you strive to be a better person, don't forget to give back. As you're considering worthy causes to donate your hard-earned money, keep in mind, many pet shelters are in desperate need for additional funds. Reach out to your local animal shelter and offer to donate your time, money or other items they need. Pet shelters take in many stray animals that may actually be lost dogs and cats. Did you ever think one day it could be your pet they reunite with it's owner?

We hope those tips were helpful, and look forward to hearing your comments about any other new year's resolutions you have for your pets.
